The Bourne Cricket Club
The Bourne Cricket Club was established in 1898 by the Bourne Village teacher George Chennell and has always been known as a friendly, sociable and inclusive club. All ages and abilities are welcomed to play, practice at the nets or take part in social events as a social member.
The Bourne CC play their home matches on the Bourne Green on Saturdays and Sundays from April to September, taking part in the I’Anson League competitions. They currently field a 1st XI in Division 3 and a 2nd XI in Division 7 as well as a 20/20 side, the ‘Bourne Barracudas’ who play in the Surrey Slam competition.
The club has both an adult and a junior section who train on Friday nights during the summer term. In recent years, the Bourne CC has fielded a successful girls team, while in 2015 a mixed-gender team reached the quarter-final of the Surrey County Cup, losing in the last over to eventual winners, Guildford.
Before the Second World War, the Bourne CC were arguably the most dominant village team in West Surrey and although the war brought tragic losses to the team they successfully bounced back in the ‘50s and ‘60s to claim more Championship titles.
Perhaps the most famous Bourne CC player was George Sturt (1863-1927) whose books about the The Bourne, its characters and its late Victorian lifestyle became collectors’ items. He only played on a handful of occasions, if a regular was missing, but he served on the club committee for almost a decade and his committee meeting notes were much admired for their wit.
The most famous sportsmen to have played in teams against the Bourne CC are Jonny Wilkinson, Graham Thorpe and, more recently, England cricketer Ollie Pope. Each of them scored plenty of runs on the Bourne’s friendly batting surface.
